When you say it, it's marketing. When they say it, it's social proof.

What Is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing is the process of gaining attention for your product or business online via social media channels. This broad term covers activities on all social media platforms. Most people will quickly name platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and even YouTube. However, there are many other platforms out there to consider such as Tumblr, Reddit and more.

The key to success in any social media marketing efforts is to have a strategy. Creating a solid social media marketing strategy doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, you can get started with these 5 steps:

Step 1: Identify Your Goals

Taking the time to identify your marketing objectives is the crucial first step. Using the SMART goals method (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound) is generally considered the best way to start. Once you have goals in place, you are able to gauge your progress by tracking meaningful metrics.

Step 2: Understand Your Audience

Since each social media platform has its own unique demographics, it’s important to understand who your target audience is. Identify your audience through traditional demographics such as age, gender, income, etc. but also take a look at some psychographic measures like likes and behaviors as well.

Step 3: Audit Your Current Status

If you’re already using social media tools, you need to take a look at what’s working and what isn’t. You definitely don’t want to incorporate things that aren’t working into your strategy but you also want to make sure to include, and possibly even amplify, things that are working well.

Step 4: Improve Your Profiles

Once you decide which platforms you will be using based on what matches up with your target audience, it’s important to have fully realized profiles. Make sure your branding is consistent across all platforms and that your contact information is complete.

Step 5: Create a Content Sharing Calendar

Once you have decided where you will share, think about what types of content you are going to share and when. Don’t just guess. Put the content topics down for specific days and times on your calendar. Using the same days and times consistently for a period will also help you generate those metrics to let you know what is working in your new plan.

Using these five basic steps will help you create a social media marketing strategy for your business.  You’ll no longer have to worry about what to post and when to post it and social media engagement will not be an afterthought. Once you have the strategy in place, don’t forget to engage along the way and check your progress by reviewing analytics.
